Proper Position is Critical to Good Punching and Leverage Technique...
by Master Paul Borisoff
The functionality of your arms and legs is product of human evolution and people are built in differing ways. Part of your study in Kung-Fu is learning to work with the body that you were given. Position is an important element in accomplishing the task you set out to do.
We have learned that being close is a critical part of applying a good leverage. Similarly we find that we need room to work when delivering a high impact punch. Good positioning is also influenced by the need to keep your vital areas out of his reach.
Leverages require torque (twisting force), which is more abundant when you are close to the operation that you are performing. Punching, with high impact, requires travel along a longer path.
When executing technique, you should identify what operation is to be accomplished, and position yourself appropriately. One should not be jammed when trying to punch, and one should not be too far away when trying to apply the leverage.
Leverages applied at a far distance are ineffective. Punches executed in a confined space become pushy and unconvincing. Punching and Leverages are two related ideas, however, in their execution, each has specific, differing requirements. Lessons are examples of how to properly utilize the principles involved in punching and leverage combinations.
During your workout, one needs to focus on the task at hand. It is critical to visualize the technique that is needed, and understand how to best apply it.
